Community Chest and Welcome Message

Postby MickeyDal on Fri Apr 25, 2008 11:22 am

Guys and Gals,

At the bottom of the page is a Community Chest icon. It is for collecting 'donations' for the DallasHistory board. (This is NOT a scam by me to make some extra income.)

If we have donations, we can do extra things to the board. Such as, for $4.95 a month, we can drop the "ad/Sense" (those double underline of words with ads in them), etc. For $15 a year, we could have a specific Domain Name (if someone thinks of one not already taken).

I just noticed this feature, and of course, we have $0. Just wanted to let you know what it was.

Also, since I am set to not automatically log on every time I come here, I notice the Welcome Message to new users. I can now modify this, but so far see nothing wrong with the one that is there.

Any opinions or comments, let me know.

Is that $4.95/month per user/member or just $4.95/month?

Clyde,

$4.95 per month for the forum. (As I understand it.)

FreeForums is free because they are allowed to put ads on the site. If we want to pay, we can have the ads removed.

They have announce that eventually we could get "ad sharing", meaning that we could part of the ad revenue to support our paid for improvements. (This has not been implemented yet.) They talk about these improvements at this link:

I donated $15 just a few minutes ago, so that we might try the ad free option for a month, to see. We could also go with a domain name of www.DFWHistory.com which is available.

Guys and Gals,

I donated $15 to the Community Chest, and had the Ads removed. (To see what it was like.)

If you can live with the Ads, let me know. The removal costs $4.95 a month. We still have $10.05 left, but I wanted to at least try it without ads once again for a month or so.

Well, we will gladly kick in another $15. How do we send the money?

Sharon

Click on "community chest" at bottom of any page, then click on "make donation", then click on "pay pal" logo. It'll take you to a secure page to use most any credit card.

Moved this to the Tips and Hints section.

Guys, how are you liking the ad-free version? Worth $5 a month?

We only get 80% of the money donated, and the other 20% goes to FreeForum.

We still have 31 points (dollars) of the $45 donated so far. I will keep the ads off as long as the points last (5 a month).

Does everyone agree this is the best use? We can also buy a Domain Name for 15 a year. (Most of the other options are about upload space, for attachments. But we are ok for now.)

Yes, it is worth it not to have all those highlighted underscored words etc. We did not want to add more ad blocker.
Thanks for taking care of this for us.

Sharon,

No problem. I do try to check in occassionally, although I have posted very little lately. (Trying to make a living, I guess.)

But BIG BROTHER is watching! (Usually here in my underwear...... but let's not creep everyone out at once!)
