Dallas Artillery Brigade

Postby MickeyDal on Tue Aug 18, 2009 12:21 pm

Guys and Gals,

Went the the DHS Brown Bag seminar last week, and the topic of discussion was the Dallas Artillery Company. (Or Brigade.)

Apparently prior to them serving in the Civil War, they had uniforms that included Jaguar pants, Jaguar vest over a bright red shirt, and sombrero with jaguar trim. Ed (who gave the presentation) has never found a photo of this outfit, and has always been looking for one.

The Dealeys were not in Dallas until 1883, so none of us where part of the pre-Civil War brigade. But maybe some of the other old Dallas families were? (Sharon?)

Has anyone run across any such old photos, or other artifacts?

Jerry.... By the use of the term "jaguar" do you mean they were spotted in some way to provide an appearance like today's camo uniforms? Seems a bright red shirt under a vest would not serve well in that case, and sombreros would pretty well stand out.

Must have been an interesting seminar, though, and you're appreciated for attending and passing on info to the rest of us that can't.

Fred,

They never saw combat in those getups, just did shows at parks and other things. (Down from Oak Cliff in the Trinity basin.) The minute they were called up into the Confederacy, the first thing they did was get rid of the gaudy uniforms.

Would love to find an old photo, but photography pre-Civil war was rare enough, and most of the people in the Brigade was the more "well-to-do" sons, as they had to buy their own uniforms and equipment.
