Flu Shots

Postby Cedar on Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:02 pm

Don't forget! My little one and her dad both have that rotten bug, as it hit too early for us to get the jab in the arm. But we will ~ as soon as they are better (through God's merciful healing).

The flu is one thing ... but when it develops into pneumonia ... that is not fun :!: :gloomy:

So, get your shots, sweet folks :!:

This is a very tragic loss for her family, due to the flu and pneumonia ... a precious angel named Lindsey.

Holly;

With all due respects; I don't share your enthusiasm for flu shots; nor does my wife, an RN. Because influenza is viral; there is not sufficient evident that these shots work. Plus, the one for H1N1 has not been throughly vetted; there have been a tiny percentage of bad side effects from these shots in the past.

I was sent the following from someone here at work. It is my opinion that following these guidelines, along with regular exercise and adequate rest to keep your immune system and overall health in tip top shape, is better.

Happy Breathing From An RN Friend

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital, Bombay Hospital, Saifee Hospital, Tata Memorial etc.

Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all of you to know

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6.* Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Some medical workers in New York state are rising up in arms about the state requiring a flu shot for all medical workers in certain areas such as home health and emergency rooms.

I also get annual flu shots, but passed on the H1N1 since I do not fall in the "Priority Population" group.

James, I'm not that big on immunizations, either; in fact, had my daughter receive the bare minimum in order for her to be kosher for the state and the school districts. We did not receive flu shots last year, and so became very ill this summer ... as you know. The man about the place, however, did receive his ordinary flu shot at work, and the bug bypassed him. My thought is that the regular vaccine is enough to ward off swine flu.

Too, homeopathic physicians had much success with their patients -- losing very few -- during the influenza epidemic of 1918. The clinic that we went to while living in Denton stocked a homeopathic remedy which my daughter and I took for two years and which seemed to keep us well. Health stores carry similar products, but I'm not sure how effective they are.

My little one is better today, but we'll still be heading to the doctor's office later this afternoon ... just to be safe. It has felt strange for me to be the well one in the house, but I am thankful to be the caregiver this time around.

Wife and I ahve both been getting the annual flu shot for years, and both of us worked (and Carlie still does, her volunteer work as a historic site docent) at things taht got us exposed to flu and other things. Neither of us has ahd the flu. Whther it was the flu shots or something else - dunno. But we'll get them again this year. As to H1N1, not sure. But if not, it will be because you doc says "not recommended for you at your ages".
