Letot Community and cemetery

Postby Anonymous on Sat Sep 08, 2007 9:13 am

I have recently learned of the Letot community in Dallas from 2 dear friends who lived there in the 1930's. They are now 88 and 95 years of age! According to the handbook of texas, Letot was at the intersection of Lombardy Lane and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad, seven miles northwest of Dallas in northeastern Dallas County. By 1968 the community had a population of 540, then in 1970 it got swallowed up by Dallas.

From I35E, you would take the Manana Road exit or Lombardy exit. There is a Letot cemetery there.

Does anyone have family who would have lived in this area back in the day or any stories to tell about this area.

Hi there, Sandra!

Glad to see you figured out this Forum and were able to post.

I'm a cliffie, so all I know about Letot is what I've learned from the DHS board, the Handbook of Texas, etc., in recent years.

Hopefully, some of the other readers/posters can help with your inquiry.

Newbie posting here.

Wasn't there also a Letot elementary school on Lombardy, (close to the train tracks?)

I don't know much about the community, but I found these links online that might be of interest. The first two are an old threads from the DHS message board.

As you can see from this link, there were never very many families living in the community.

This link tells about the Old Letot Cemetery with a census.

This link makes reference to a Letot Baptist Church.

This link from Jim Wheat makes reference to a fire in 1891 at the Gin House of A. H. Letot.

There's much more information online about the current uses of the school and the area. Personally, I just love the sound of the name, Letot. Thanks to all for giving me an excuse to learn more about the Letots and the community.

Best,

Letot city cemetery

Postby C.Flatt tire on Mon Aug 04, 2008 10:25 pm

Please be carefull here. There are 2 cemeteries called LETOT ... This cemetery is the city cemetery that was next to the old post office. Since 1990, a new gate sign has been put up.

A Yankee fellow that worked in a machine shop about 4 doors down took a real interest in restoring it. He moved back home about 2005 and left me the key to the cemetery. I have mowed it twice thru the years. Francis James has the boy scouts mow it now. I gave her the key. THe warehouse workers over at JOHN DEERE on Harry Hines have worked it thru the 1990's.

I first went thru it in about 1996. Several FARMERS BRANCH folks are buried in the cemetery. As to the inventory, 3 men are CSA Vets.:

Rufes Shepherd , A. Henager , Tom Reeder.

The LETOT FAMILY cemetery is at the rear of the Calvary cemetery nearby. OLd man Clement Letot is buried in his bed, french style. He served in Russia in the 1850's Crimean War as a soldier..

I was disappointed to find that the Letot Family Cemetery (at the rear of Calvary Hill) has been deemed a "NO TRESPASSING" area when visiting this week. The gate is not locked and what I thought was an iron fence with large spikes turned out to be PVC!
