More demolition scheduled

Way cleared for downtown Dallas park
Landmark Commission first votes to deny, then OKs demolition permits

personally IIRC a park would definitely make the view of the old city hall better

Scott,

I deleted the topic called "Old Red Courthouse" that had this photo on it, as it was confusing where this photo was taken. (Nowhere near Old Red, obviously.)

Your second attempt at Old Red, which shows a photo of Old Red was left alone.

Sharon
I know you have some history with Denison, Texas so I thought you might find this information interesting. It's a email from one of my cousins that grew up in Denison. Seems that even small towns are dealing with those that want to destroy our past.

The old Denison High School (not to be confused with the "new" DHS that was built in the mid-1950s and will soon be replaced by a still newer building) is at the top of Preservation Texas's list of Most Endangered Historic Places.

http://www.preservationtexas.org/endangered/2007.htm

Today is the deadline for a local group to come up with the money to save it, but it appears that they will fall considerably short of the mark. Demolition of the structure actually began a couple of months ago after years of failed efforts to save it. Then work was halted after the auditorium, gymnasium, and two classroom wings (all added after the original school was built in 1913) were removed, exposing a west entrance that had not been seen for generations.

The building was used as a junior high school from the mid-50s until it closed in 1986. I was in junior high there from the fall of 1963 to the spring of 1966. The website below includes a Billy Joe Royal music video ("Time Slips Away") shot on location in 1990. I recommend it.

I had not seen Ronnie's original august post on this. I have a 1946 (my birth year) Yellowjacket from Denison High School. there is a picture like the one on the link. My brothers went there. Sadly, one of them has passed too.

Good news. I found a myspace page dedicated to the school, and I e-mailed him. HE said that last Saturday, the company that was doing the demo, just up and left and took their equipment with them. Not even saying why or when. So, it looks like he had a change of heart? However, the school is wide open now, due to the demo that did occur (not including the latter additions that were already torn down).

Unless asbestos remediation was done, before the demolition started, they may have discovered asbestos, and ordinary demolition contractors will cut and run if they encounter it.

deep elm

Postby alexandertroup on Wed Apr 08, 2009 1:48 pm

May save Sons Of Herman after all, went to Deep Elm Arts Festival and found out developers were putting squeeze on folks who would rent, double their rent force them out and then, sit on the land and tear anything down, well met 4 folks who now protest this kind of underworld developement....

Which is how they have been doing downtown, on a basic theme , thus , the innere cityof Dallas is now run by foreign intrest our out of state and native placement, by 72 percent...

The Deep Elm Arts event also brought out 9 pink slip Belo reporters and several radio folks who are without jobs...despite the negative impact of this kind of relization, people are postive to grow and realize, they want to do better and get on without folks who are of a negative influence...things will change....amen.....A/T
