Actually, John, we can thank Jim Wheat for finding this website. He sent it to a few of us.

I've given Jim the link to this forum, but he seldom will post unless he has the time or historical interest in a particular topic that "grabs" him. He's a great guy with many sources that he's discovered and used in developing his wonderful website "Dallas County Texas Archives".

Fred, remember on the Old Board there was a thread on Carbon? On page 7 there is a picture of one of the Carbon workers all covered in the stuff. Doesn't look like fun to me!

What's really something are all the kids that were really young working in the coal mines. I ready up on that Shorpy kid and he died at age 32....probably from working in the coal mine, inhaling all the coal dust.....some of those pictures and photographers were used when the gov began the child labor laws.

JNC, that remindsme of a story. My mother use to help out on the ranch (before they moved to town) picking cotton. One day, she took "us" out to the river (the Red River, where the ranch was) and decided to get us some fresh, unpicked cotton. Mind you that she forgot how far those stalks go down into the ground ( many feet).....all we could see was a horrible expression on her face, then a big red dust cloud come up when she fell flat on her bottom! Maybe I'm easily amused. Maybe I shouldn't be telling this ebarrasing story.......Linda, Debby, and GMW have met my mother!!!!!

Reminds me of my father's attempt to toughen up his "city-fied" son at about 10 yrs old. We went to Colorado, somewhere in the rural mountains and stayed in this cabin that has no t.v. or phone. I remember sleeping in a loft, like on Little house on the Praire. Anyway we had to go get firewood and had no saw. Not even a pocket knife! He said, "a mountian man dont need no saw". My dad grabs a dead tree limb(still attatched to the tree) and when it wouldnt break off, he put both feet about three feet up on the trunk of the tree, still grasping the dead limb. Using his legs to push against the tree. When the limb finally gave he flew backwards about 6 feet on his ass! Me and my sister laughed and to this day we call him the "mountain man"!
