Be there or be square

next Wednesday, Sept. 17, the downtown location at 1601 McKinney will offer its venerable Wednesday special - two cheese enchiladas, rice and beans - for 90 cents. The deal's good from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. I tremble for the busboys.

Wow... it would almost be worth the drive.

The El Fenix or El Chico cheese and onion enchilada sets off a primal response with me.

Some folks may have a more exquisite Mexican plate, but I think the basic enchilada plate is the benchmark for true TexMexican dining.

Well, we did not make it on 9-17 which would have been my wife's birthday, and there was no ninety center, but we did eat lunch in the El Fenix that is just west of the north end of DFW again on 11-15 and, as always its a quick fix for Tex-Mex upon arrival. Someone had reported that El Fenix had new owners. We could not taste any difference in recipes. Can anyone else comment on that possibility?

Bill, the new owner is a long time customer at ElFenix and swears not to change a thing. Mr. Martinez can still be found at the downtown location many nights. We had a family gathering and sat in the bar area. Mr. Martinez had a table there and did magic tricks for us. He is real nice and was a pilot in WW2.

It's been so long since I played with my friends here...I am unsure how to work the most simple of tasks! Agghhh!

I can only hope my reply goes in the right spot...

Aside from loving seeing all of your names....I am so sad I missed out on this!

I flew with a girl from the Martinez family back in my working days...1991-2000 ( short career!)

Her name was Anna and her Grandfather was from what I recall a Patriarch of sorts...for this establishment. She often called my roommate to come wait tables for their location on Lemmon Ave. I realize the Downtown location is the original, but this is where Anna's family seemed to gather- Lemmon..

I know nothing about the Martinez family, but I dang sure enjoy their FOOD! Yummers!!!
I might have to look Leslie up and see what she can divulge...Anna was her best friend. It's always fun to get an inside scoop>>> :)

Happy New Year to all of you!

OK Folks...

I have heard y'all talking about El Fenix for awhile now. Well, this past weekend, my wife and I took the weekend off to "decompress" at a hotel, and see the Dallas symphony Sunday night.

I saw the El Fenix resteraunt, and told her I had heard alot about it, and that maybe we could eat there Sunday night before the symphony. She was expecting something more like "Steak and Ale", but agreed to it.

From the chips and hot sauce onward, it was fantastic. We have eaten at a lot of Mexican resteraunts (Casa Ole is chain we are most fond of from the Gulf Coast); but this was definitely the best. No letdown at all from what she was expecting. Many thanks for the indirect recommendation.

The waiter told us they are planning to open additional branches in Irving and Waxahatchie. The later one will be half the distance from us; if they can maintain the same quality; we will be going often.
