Holly
I'm glad you've found Townes Van Zandt.
He's one of my all time favorite Texas singer/songwriters.
Ask anyone that knows Texas music, who are the best of the state's singer/songwriters and Townes name will come up.

Me too, Ronnie. I don't have any of his CD's, so just listen to maybe two of his songs a week ... which seems to be the best way to absorb and appreciate Townes Van Zandt.

I hadn't thought about the very creepy tune, DOA (ca. 1970), till Ronnie shared it in the 'song lyrics' game here some time ago. And I hadn't known that the group who recorded it - Bloodrock - was local (Fort Worth :) ) till someone showed up with one of their old LPs to use as decoration on a parade float for my daughter's school choir. But they are ... and they're "live and doing well" :!: 8)

[quote="Cedar"]This is sweet ~ first heard on a gorgeous, ivy-green album by me down in Austin. My step-father escorted me to the live, (shallowly) varnished-table event, in Dallas. Faces ... ca. 1975? I do not remember, but the song ever shall remain. And here I beg: what is Texas music?

I know I'm rather late to the party responding to such and old post but just wanted to add that I attended the same concert and it was indeed at Faces. In addition to Willis Alan Ramsey, others I remember seeing there were Jonathan Edwards, Tom Waits and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Loved Faces.

Yo, Mr. Felts :!: This is Holly from the old board. Glad you've signed onto this lazy, rollin'-along party ~ 'tis never too late :)

How neat that you were there, too. I'm thinking that the Willis concert was held in 1976 rather than '75, and it's good to know that the venue was Faces. Thanks for passing that info along.

Hope you all are still enjoying the farming life :)

I loved Faces also. I remember other places like Mother Blues, Poor David's, etc. during the late 70's. There was a group my wife and I really enjoyed during that time that played in and around that area, The Bee's Knees. The trio was Roger Burton, Michael Paulson and Jerry Jackson and they cut a couple of albums through Dallas-based Derrick Records. Anson Funderburgh would join in with them on occasion. Good times had by all 8) 8)

Steve, I only went to Faces and Mother Blues a couple of times after I came of age ... and that was because I spent every free dark moment dancing to Buster Brown at Popsicle Toes (till I became a mommy) :) My son's late dad was a big jazz and funk fan, in addition to being a very gifted photographer and graphic artist. I wish that more of his work had survived, but I do have a few slides of photos which he took of Buster Brown all those years ago; will try to have these made into prints.

One of my dearest friends was an enthusiast of Bees Knees. I'd forgotten about them!

Going to have to digitize my Bees Knees record (album and single) some day!

Speaking of music, does everyone know what's happening in Dallas at 91.7 FM, Monday morning at 7:00 a.m.?

YAY! Get ready for some decent quality music in Dallas again! No more Steve Miller, Styx, Z.Z. Top, Pink Floyd or Boston for a while. Don't get me wrong - I love that stuff, in moderation!

Nice article from New York Times. Of the places listed I've been to all but Dallas Gilley's. My favorites are Blanco's in Houston and Arkey's in Bandera. And my opinion Billy Bob's is worth one look just so's you can say you've been there.

Art, I have been listening a little bit ... when I can and in the truck ~ and enjoying :) Was surprised to hear some Primo and Mike without the brand-name of those two blessed souls fronting it ... and was strengthened in the hope that our land can be redeemed. It matters which wavelengths spread out over Texas space, you see. If they're synchronized purely and sweetly, ancient beats will rise up to meet them.

Excellent! Glad you are enjoying the music. I've heard a few repeats (but it's stuff nobody else is playing around here). So I don't mind too much . . . yet!

The syndicated shows "World Cafe" and "Mountain Stage" are just great!

And just for you there's "Thistle & Shamrock" on Saturdays and Sundays!

And "Acoustic Cafe" is not bad either.

A definite breath of fresh air around these here parts!

Thanks again, Art! I definitely will be tuning into those shows.

This afternoon, I was listening to the live show which featured an interview and performance by a boy from New Jersey ~ John Gorka. He was great :!: It's a real treat to have new music poured right into your ear; can't help but be impressed by the young talent which is springing up :)
