This is what I remember of the best Man Cave I saw as a child. I was there a few times.
The house was north of Lover's Lane and west of the RR tracks and Douglas (where now is the toll road) but there may not be anyone left who could tell me the street, the name of which I've forgotten. My father's then boss and his wife, call them Claude (an executive with the original Braniff company) and Irene, lived there. They had no children but there was a niece who spent time with them. I think the house must have been made of Austin stone and built before 1942 when Braniff moved to Dallas.
The house was big enough for two people and a part timer but eventually Claude added on a suite that he called the "Dog House," where he could play poker with his cronies and not disturb his wife. Part of the story about the building of the rooms was that some how an existing closet and a case of liquor got walled off, closed up, during the construction.
Eventually Claude's interests turned to other things. He bought a property in East Texas and it had a lake or he had a dam built and he spent a lot of time there. Talk was that "improving" a property while developing it for your own recreation (Claude was a great fisherman) was a way to shield income from taxes in those days. Eventually he sold that property to one of the most famous original Dallas Cowboys and some of you might have seen television ads which were made there.
Unless sold for a teardown and new construction I suppose that house is still there. Maybe I''ll hunt for it if/when I get to Dallas again.
