Searching the Old Board

Postby Peterk on Tue Apr 24, 2007 7:36 pm

There is a way to search the old DHS board. and it is a lot easier than one would think. All you have to do is use google.

in the space where you put the search terms just do the following

<search term> site:dallashistory.org

<search term> can be a single word, a group of words or an exact phrase

so to do a search for the dac I used the following

DAC site:dallashistory.org

that search returns 28 hits

now do this search
cabin site:dallashistory.org

and you get 3,000+ hits. but if you want to narrow the search to a particular year just use this search

cabin site:dallashistory.org 2001

now go forth and search to your heart's content

Peter, this is one of the very nicest things that you've ever done for us. Thank you so much. I also might add that if we can get there that we might want to print out old messages that are particularly important because IF the DHS does eventually shut it down completely, this information can be lost forever. Just a thought.

"an exact phrase " search in google requires that the phrase be put in quotation marks

for example
this search
bryan cabin site:dallashistory.org

returns 77 hits

this search
"bryan cabin" site:dallashistory.org

returns 75 hits

and this search
"bryan cabin" site:dallashistory.org 2001

returns 8 hits

Well, that's my "something new" I learned today. I've been using Google for years and never knew that you could have it search for information at a particular site. Thanks for sharing.

I hesitate to move this one to Pending Deletion, simply because it is a helpful hint, that I often forget about. So I am replying, and keeping this open.

this is the problem with trying to determine what to keep or not. maybe we need a sub-forum called Tips. There is no reason to post a reply just to keep something active.
sheesh
