THE SEARCHABLE WALL

Postby Bill Crane on Sun May 24, 2009 1:10 pm

I HAD SOME DIFFICULTY IN DECIDING WHICH CATEGORY TO PUT THIS UNDER. IT MIGHT HAVE GONE UNDER FAMILY OR NEWS (I KNOW THERE IS AT LEAST ONE "MEMORIAL DAY" THREAD). AND I WISH I HAD A NAME OR HEADING THAT BETTER CONVEYS THE GRAVITY OF THE INFORMATION AND THE RESPECT IN WHICH I THINK IT SHOULD BE HELD.

MANY OF YOU PROBABLY KNOW ABOUT THIS WEBSITE.

Basically it is a website that lets you search the names on the Vietnam Memorial for a family name or home town and so on.

There are thirteen Crane names in the data base, more than I remember from the time I visited the Wall. So far as I know I am not closely related to any of them.

As I have done before I want to thank those on this message board - and otherwise - who have served.

SEARCH INTERACTIVE VIETNAM WALL
By THE WASHINGTON TIMES | Friday, May 22, 2009

The Washington Times has partnered with the Internet company Footnote.com on a new project that transforms Washington's Vietnam war memorial wall into an interactive, personal journey on the Web. The Interactive Vietnam Veterans Memorial allows you to search the names on the wall and to drill down into the government's official war records to learn details about each of the 58,000-plus heroes enshrined on the wall.

You can also add your own personal stories, remembrances and photographs.

The digital image of the Wall — actually thousands of photos fused together — locates each veteran's name where it appears on the Memorial. From there, any visitor from The Times site can leave their stories and remembrances or upload photos of veterans.

The article goes on to tell how to use the link to the site.

If you can't otherwise link to the article and so on, try:

lucianne.com

However, this item will probably come off the first screen on Lucianne no later than tomorrow and perhaps today.

Bill, thank you for posting this link.
footnotes. com (which I subscribe too) is heading this project.
There is a whole section devoted to Vietnam, WWII etc and more being added each day.

footnotes only scans original documents. So the family notes and remembrances are new. Apparently there has been much interest.

Thanks for the link, Bill.

I'll check it out later. I know some childhood friends are on the wall, as I saw their names when I was in D.C. in the 1980s.
